The Best Affordable and Instagram Friendly Hotel in Washington, DC: Hotel Hive
/I love Washington, DC. I wish there was some kind of way that I could move the city so it could be closer to Dallas. I grew up in Richmond, VA and have so many great memories of visiting DC.
I love living in Dallas but DC will always feel like home. There's a unique energy that you'll find within the city which is something that I wish I could bottle up and bring back with me. I was elated when the hubby and I decided to head up to DC for a quick weekend getaway. Instead of staying with family, we decided to crash at Hotel Hive.
Hotel Hive isn't your average hotel and it isn't for the average traveler. Get your pens and pencils ready if you're looking for a quirky, comfortable, affordable, and Instagrammable hotel within Washington, DC.
WHAT'S A MICRO HOTEL?
Hotel Hive is Washington DC's first micro hotel. This basically means that the hotel rooms are a little smaller than what you're probably use to (The hotel's room range between 125-250 square feet) and the rooms aren't filled with unnecessary items that take up space. You won't find an iron or ironing board in the room but the hotel will provide you with one if needed. Plus, they'll also supply you with toiletries like toothbrushes and toothpaste if you're tight on luggage space. Since we tend to pack light the room size was no issue for us. There were plenty of outlets around the room, which were great for charging our camera gear, laptop, phones and other items. Each room includes the following:
- Free Fast Wifi (YAY!)
- USB Charging Ports
- Under Bed Luggage Storage
- Tivoli Bluetooth Music
- Private Bathroom
- Hairdryer
- Smart TV
If you're trying to ball on a budget the hotel also has bunk bed and buzz rooms for those that plan on turning up all night and sleeping late. The bathroom was small but well appointed and of course had one of my favorite things...you guessed it product dispensers.
&pizza
One of my favorite things about Hotel Hive, is the pizza shop downstairs! YES! Inside your room you'll find a menu for &pizza which serves some of the best pizza in DC. I'm not exagerrating.
I literally ate pizza every day of our stay and by the end of our trip my husband banned me from eating another slice! You can opt for full service dining at the Hive Bar, or pick up a pie to go. Did I also mention that they have a bomb breakfast and late night menu? Score!
HIVE BAR x &bar
I loved how cute this area was and it becomes quite the chill spot in the evenings.
The Hive Bar features everything from coffee to late night cocktails.
There's also an incredible rooftop located on the top of the hotel. Unfortunately, I didn't get to chill up there due to the inclement weather but I'll make up for it when I come back next Spring.
BLOGGER TIP- The hotel has ton's of boxwoods on the rooftop and outside on the patio at &pizza. Don't forget to snap a pic!
IT'S QUIRKY!
I love it when a hotel has personality and Hotel Hive is quirky! I wish there was a way I could change the name to "Hotel Beyhive."
If you know one thing about me then you know I love Beyonce. I think she would be proud of Hotel Hive and all the "Beyhive" inspiration especially in the elevator.
THE LO-DOWN ON HOTEL HIVE'S LOCATION
It doesn't get any better than this. Hotel Hive's location is the bomb.com. The hotel is located across from GWU and you can walk to some of DC's top attractions. We took a short uber ride to Chinatown but were able to walk down to the Washington Monument and National Mall (15 minutes). Plus, Starbucks is only a five minute walk from the hotel for my fellow coffee lovers. You can also walk to the places below within 5-10 minutes.
- Lincoln Memorial (5 Minutes)
- Starbucks (5 Minutes)
- Whole Foods (5 Minutes)
- District Commons (5 Minutes)
- Georgetown (10 mins)
- Kennedy Center (10 mins
- District Commons (5 mins)
We had no concerns with safety aside from the usual street smarts you should have when walking in any city. I highly recommend that you book this hotel if you're looking for a prime location in DC. If you plan on driving to the hotel, the hotel doesn't have valet or a garage but you can reserve parking before you arrive at nearby garages. Get all the deets by going here.
THE COST
Room charges vary depending on availability but you can easily score a room here for $100/night or less! This rate is a rarity in DC considering the hotel's prime location. Hotel Hive also keeps it real and there are no hidden fees. You can only expect to be charged $50 per room as a hold for incidentals, and 14.5% for incidentals. The hotel only takes credit cards so be sure to have your plastic on hand.
OVERALL THOUGHTS
I've finally found my "hive" in DC. I can't wait to stay at this hotel during my next visit to the District. I totally understand why this hotel is highly ranked on TripAdvisor and why its recieved so many awards. If you're a blogger like me, then this is the perfect hotel to capture tons of great Instagram and blog shots. Special thanks to Hotel Hive for hosting me, and to my two new friends Ruthie and Elise at the front desk who were super sweet!
